Waikiki

Known for its white sands and surfing, and once only a playground for the rich; the neighborhood of Waikiki neighborhood now welcomes all to enjoy. Spouting waters is the Hawaiian meaning of Waikiki. Honoring the rivers that once flowed into the sea from the area. It would have looked as though water spouted from the area to the sea. You will not run out of things to do or see, there is something literally for everyone here. Likely you have heard of the silky white sands and waves for long-board surfing, maybe even the world-famous shopping and dining. However, you will find so much more than these to keep you busy here.

Honolulu Farmer’s Market

Come to the Blaisdell Concert Hall armed with picnic blankets or chairs to enjoy your meal finds on the lawn. You can park for free here and check out the many delicious local restaurants offerings. Shop the can’t be beat prices of the local produce, honey, jams, and other usual local goods. It is no accident this market occurs during the evening meal time. Plan to get your shopping done Wednesdays, 4 pm to 7 pm, then eat your meal while taking in the beautiful sunset.

Pau Hana Market (Food Truck Market)

If you are a food truck connoisseur, or even if you just like to frequent them, you need to visit this Food Truck Market. The trucks may change day-to-day, but many are constant. The variety is good, and you can sit at the umbrella picnic tables to enjoy your selections.

 Beach Walk

So much more than just boutique shopping and award-winning restaurants, Beach Walk is also great for your entertainment. Here you can find ukulele lessons, quilting classes, hoop-dance fitness, and even the Beach Walk Market. Check out the stages for entertainment and live performances, like Hawaiian music and Hula dancing on Tuesdays, and free concerts on Sundays. You will also want to visit the boutiques and award-winning dining, of course.

Waikiki Beach

Known for perfect long-board surfing conditions, silky white sands, and mesmerizing turquoise waters; Waikiki Beach is world-famous and one of the most visited beaches in the world. You may not know that there are actually eight sections of this two-mile-long beach. Some of them are blocked off for surfers only. Come explore San Souci beach. It is off the hotel strip and more frequented by locals. You will find this beach is family-friendly and a great place to snorkel. 

Kuhio Beach
Come to Kuhio Beach Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at six pm to experience this authentic, and free Hula show. Bring some beach chairs or a blanket to enjoy the show from the grass. Your show starts with a torch lighting ceremony and lasts an hour.

Honolulu Zoo

Learn more about Hawaii’s indigenous species at the popular family attraction, the Honolulu Zoo. The zoo is forty-two acres of botanical gardens and wildlife. Sure to delight the whole family, the Honolulu Zoo is open daily, except for Christmas Day. 

Waikiki Aquarium

The second oldest operating aquarium in the United States, the Waikiki Aquarium is over one hundred and sixteen years old. Showcasing more than five hundred marine species, you will even find a Peppermint Angelfish on display here, the only one in the world on display! There are over three thousand marine specimens maintained here at the aquarium for you to learn about and experience.

Iolani Palace

Explore the only Royal Palace in the United States. This living restoration was the home of Hawaii’s last reigning monarchs. Having been meticulously restored to its former magnificence, the palace is open to the public for tours. You may want to book your tour tickets in advance to ensure you get the days and times you prefer for your tours. The palace is a must-see here in Waikiki.

Diamond head Crater Hike

Not far from Waikiki is Diamond Head Crater. Once used as a military post for preventing attacks on Hawaii, you can now enjoy the same views at the top of this 1.6-mile round trip moderately rated hike. The summit affords you panoramic scenic views of the ocean, Waikiki, and the surrounding areas below. Standing on the edge of a 300,000-year-old crater will take your breath away. Absolutely stunning. It should only take you about an hour to reach the top and be rewarded for your efforts. This is a must-do hike if you are able.

Weather and Transportation

Waikiki’s coldest months, January and February, still manage to maintain a 65-degree average. High temperatures in the area range from 81 to 88 in the hottest months, August and September. The weather here is not too hot and not too cold, year-round. Perfect weather to visit any time of year. 

For the most freedom of movement about the island, you would most likely want to rent a vehicle. Waikiki is quite populated, however, and if you are not leaving the immediate area, Uber, Lyft, and taxis are plentiful. Also, there is public transportation via TheBus and TheHandi-Van throughout Oahu.
